We decided to leave Sleeping Ute Mountain Casino and RV park a day early. As mentioned in an earlier post the temperature kept dropping and dropping, 16 or lower last night which is not to bad considering they predicted 10. Needing to get propane had a lot to do with the decision to leave. Since we had to put everything away anyway and it\u2019s to cold to do much outside really it was time to leave. 10+ degrees warmer here.<\/p>\n
The day started out interestingly enough, without the jeep in tow, we topped off the gas tank, then in a first for us, we filled up the propane tank. After that it was back to the campground to pick up the Jeep, before starting our 91 mile drive, it\u2019s not nearly that far as the crow flies because we just about made a big U drive. We still get the same radio station in the jeep.<\/p>\n
The road over here, just a little 2 lane state road was very bouncy, no potholes but not flat, just bouncy, mostly straight as an arrow,<\/p>\n
We\u2019re in Utah now. Since it was such a short drive and we left early, we arrived in plenty of time to go exploring. We started off in town at the rebuilt Fort Bluff. \u00a0It was originally built by the Mormon\u2019s back in 1878 I think. Many of the cabins are furnished with items donated by the decedents that built the cabins. I thought the one I listened to was to long but at each cabin they have an audio recording on history of the family that built the cabin, it\u2019s also recorded in several languages.<\/p>\n
Then it was off to a small park just down the road, to check out some Petroglyphs and have lunch, along the San Juan River, it\u2019s quite a swift river. We watch 4 inflatable rafts leave, it looked like they were loaded with camping gear so they were going on at least an over night trip.<\/p>\n
Last but not least, we were off in search of something called River House Ruins. The maps were less than readable and no signs pointing the way, our first attempt had us going through a gate, on a little 2 lane track, that led us to a couple of fabulous overlooks of the San Juan River.<\/p>\n
Second attempt had us on yet another 2 lane track in and out of a dry wash several times. We were back in there a ways, we drove about 40 minutes off road. At first we didn\u2019t find the ruins so shortly after we turned around, on our way out we met some people and they told us where to go, it was up a steep hill that we thought was \u00a0a closed trail. The couple on a 4 wheeler are the only people we met on our 2.5+ hour expedition.<\/p>\n
We only found the ruins, sadly, we did not find the Petroglyphs that should have also been in the area to.<\/p>\n
It was a beautiful day bright sunshine, acceptable temperature and this time of year almost nobody around.<\/p>\n
