Valentine Nebraska

June 15, 2023 / Rex / 0 Comments

June 13 & 14 –  And it has FINALLY cooled off—- Thankfully

We wrapped up our stay in Yankton SD area,  and 196 miles later we landed in Valentine Nebraska. It’s a small little town just large enough to have a McDonalds and Pizza Hut.

We’re staying in a small city park, located on a rather fast moving stream, the park is nothing fancy but had more people driving through than we expected.

Our route was on highway 12, they called it the Outlaw Trail, the road travels through the Nebraska Sandhills.

Copied and pasted from the web

[Where did the Nebraska Sandhills come from

These ancient sand dunes are from the Pleistocene Epoch (the geologic time period spanning about 1.8 to about 10,000 years ago). They are made of sediment eroded from the Rocky Mountains by the monumental Pleistocene glaciers, washed out into the plains, and now mostly stabilized by grassland vegetation.]
[Why is it called the Outlaw Trail in Nebraska?
Highway 12 is known as the Outlaw Trail, because of outlaws like horse thief Doc Middleton who used to roam the area. Some also believe Jesse James and his gang hid from authorities deep in the woods of what’s called Devil’s Nest near Crofton.]
It was a lonely drive, we decided to eat breakfast along the way, lets just say it was almost lunchtime before a place to pull off and eat. The road had more ups than downs and we’re now up to around 2500 feet in elevation.
With our meal times messed up we decided to try a local restaurant once we got the jeep unhooked around mid afternoon.

The visitors center where Mary needed to get a stamp for her book had a small display of artifacts found in the area.
