Mount St Helens

May 31, 2021 / Rex / 0 Comments

Today, with somewhat conflicting or confusing information we drove up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mount St Helens. When we pulled out we weren’t sure we could get there because we thought the road was probably closed. It turns out the road was fully open and with very little snow en route. The Observatory was the only thing closed, the gates were open and there were 2 rangers setting outside taking questions and the gift shop was open. The air was pretty clear and the crater was covered in snow.

Windy Ridge is the other spot to get a good view of the crater but as we discovered the other day that road is still blocked. There are suppose to be a couple more interesting spots on the south side of the mountain but it’s about 150 miles, each way to get to there so we didn’t go.

On the way back we ran across this walking trail, billed as just over a mile. It started out as an easy walk in the woods, the last part was on the opinion a gravel road………….. it proved just how out of shape I am.

Oh, and we passed a Bigfoot gift shop and they had a rather large Bigfoot outside.

Can you see me

On our way back we had our first site of Mt Rainier. Even though we drove in the Rainier NP because it has been cloudy, raining and overcast since we have been here in the area.

Pictures from the rest of our day.

for some reason many of the trees near the volcano have been topped

The Jeep down in the parking lot

you can’t tell it from the picture but these are the largest clover leaves I have ever seen
